On Monday, April 27, 2026, Accra College of Education hosted a high-level delegation from Beijing Normal University to formalize a groundbreaking memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing international collaboration in teacher education. The MoU marks the establishment of the West African branch of the China-Africa Teacher Education Center (CATEC) at Accra College, positioning the institution as a regional hub for innovation, research, professional exchange, and capacity development in teacher education.

The partnership seeks to address critical challenges in teacher preparation across Ghana and the West African sub-region, underscoring a commitment to strengthening teacher training and enhancing professional competencies. A key component of this collaboration is the creation of a dedicated center at Accra College of Education, where educators and researchers will benefit from global best practices and modern methodologies.
The signing ceremony featured prominent figures including Professor Samuel Awinkene Atintono, Principal of Accra College of Education, and Prof. Zhu Xudong, Dean of the Faculty of Education at Beijing Normal University, who represented their respective institutions. Prof. Atintono emphasized that the collaboration stemmed from sustained engagement between the two institutions, which began with discussions during an academic event in China in 2025. He highlighted the urgent need for targeted interventions in teacher preparation, given that not all educators meet the professional standards required in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.

Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, representing the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, echoed these sentiments, stating that the initiative reflects the Ghanaian government’s commitment to teacher development as a national priority. She stressed that the quality and preparedness of teachers are fundamental to effective teaching, asserting, “We cannot give what we do not have.” The establishment of this center is anticipated to significantly enhance teaching and learning outcomes across Ghana.

Prof. Zhu characterized the MoU as a pivotal moment in the context of China-Africa educational cooperation, noting the long-standing reputation of Beijing Normal University as a leader in teacher education and research. He expressed gratitude to Accra College of Education for hosting the event and underscored the center’s mission to strengthen teacher education systems, promote capacity building, and facilitate policy dialogue between China and Africa.

Through workshops, academic exchanges, research initiatives, and the integration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, this partnership stands to greatly improve teacher education across the region, ultimately facilitating the development of quality education in West Africa.
