In 1962, the Accra College of education was established by an Act of Parliament, the first Principal became Mr. L. B. AMA HESSE. The following have held the position of Principal of the College.

Following the Colleges of Education Act 2012, (Act 847) all Colleges may award diploma in Basic Education as they have now been raised to tertiary status. The College grades its products for the award of Diploma in Basic Education.
