Professor S.A. Atintono, the principal of Accra College of Education, was a member of a panel that discussed the advantages of knowing multiple languages on the GTV Talking Point show on Sunday, February 26th, 2023.

The discussion was prompted by the celebration of International Mother Language Day on February 21st, a day designated by UNESCO to promote linguistic diversity and protect all world languages.

This year’s theme was “Multi-lingual Education, a Necessity to Transform Education,” and emphasized the importance of teaching children in their mother tongues. The panel consisted of Professor Atintono and Professor Adams Bodomo from the University of Vienna, who is currently a visiting scholar at the School of Languages, University of Ghana.

Professor Atintono stated that the current Language Policy in Ghana is a Bilingual Model, and the only issue is that the Language Policy draft has yet to be implemented due to a lack of government resources. He emphasized that Ghanaian values are present in all of the country’s cultures, and language is a medium for these cultures.

Professor Bodomo added that it is important not to be hesitant about learning our local languages.
